Reader Response 7 - Ch: 11

Chapter 11: From the Historical to the Contemporary

"Mind Mapping" Method

Teacher Organizations

  • The National Teacher Education Association (NEA) origins reach all the way back to 1857
  • 3 million members (world's largest organization)
  • The American Federation of Teachers
  • AFT organized on the trade union model in 1916 (Gutek, 2013, p. 384)
  • 1.5 million members are classroom teachers

Academic Standards

  • "Basic Education" emerged during the 1970's
  • More rigorous academic standards (Gutek, 2013, p. 385)

A Nation at Risk

  • Established criteria to be improved upon
  • No Child Left Behind Act in 2001 (Gutek, p. 385-386)

The Evolution-Creation Controversy

  • Charles Darwin 1859
  • Scopes trial in Dayton, Tennessee
  • Various State Decisions Made (Gutek, 2013, p. 388-389)

Globalization and Education

  • Globalization's Educational Implications
  • European Exploration and Colonization drastically changed the face of North America.

European Exploration and Colonization as A Global Process

  • Colonization led to globalization over time
  • "Era of European Exploration" (Gutek 2013, p. 390)

Modern Globalization

Electronic Communications

  • Early 21st century technology has surpassed all concepts from the past. CNN and constant electronic media coverage sweeps the board (Gutek, 2013, p. 390-391).

The Global Economy

  • Various agencies, capital, investments, production and marketing lead to distributions world wide (Gutek, 2013, p. 391).

Regional Trade Organizations

  • NAFTA - North America Free Trade Agreement
  • Regional trade organizations seeking to reduce trade barriers and encourage economic interactions (Gutek, 2013, p. 391)

Controversies Related to Globalization

  • Exploits or improves society? (Gutek, 2013, p. 391-392)
  • Controversies
  • Globalization - information between individuals effects schools and classrooms (Gutek, 2013, p. 392-393)

Conclusion

Difficult to determine what will be historically significant in the future

4 predictions:

1) Teacher Organizations
2) Academic Standards
3) Evolution Teachings
4) Globalization

Personal connections

Teacher Organizations

  • I was a member of the NEA for 3 years and also a member of PET (Professional Educators of Tennessee) for 1 year.
  • These organizations are put into place for the safety and benefit of teachers but I wish there was still more security in this field.

Personal Connections

Academic Standards

  • Curriculum Standards are constantly being raised. As a teacher this is challenging to be held accountable for such new implementations.

Personal Connections

The Evolution-Creative Controversy

  • I personally believe that there are more important issues in education than this debate. Other academic and personal areas should take precedence over this debate. While I am not limiting the importance of this issue, I am merely stating that other areas should be viewed with equally high regard.

Personal Connections

Globalization and Education

  • Globalization has been a huge factor in American education. While there are various viewpoints present, there are many pros and cons to both sides of the situation.

Personal Connections

Conclusion

  • I agree that Teacher Organizations, Academic Standards, and Globalization will be major factors in the future of education. However, I think "Religion" will override "Evolution" in that area.
